- In practice for almost 30 years (17 years as partner with the Toronto office of another national law firm, including service as chair of that firm's National Insolvency and Restructuring Group)
Sheryl specializes in the area of business bankruptcy and corporate restructuring, commercial insolvency, and creditors' and debtors' remedies. Sheryl's practice is focused on cross-border business restructuring matters, including parallel and companion proceedings filed under Chapter 11 or Chapter 15 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code and the Canada Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act. Sheryl acts for debtors, bondholder groups, formal and ad hoc creditors' committees, institutional and distressed debt investors, indenture trustees, senior secured creditors, lending syndicates, operating, term, asset-based and second lien lenders, purchasers, directors, equity holders, suppliers, monitors, receivers and trustees in bankruptcy in cross-border and domestic proceedings under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act and Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act. She has significant experience in complex restructurings in a diverse range of sectors, including manufacturing, steel, automotive, forest products and natural resources, retail, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, technology, biomedical, real estate marketing, entertainment and media.
Sheryl is a member of the Insolvency Institute of Canada. She is the Co-Chair of the Chapter 11 Subcommittee of the Business Bankruptcy Committee of the ABA Section of Business Law. Sheryl served as Chair of the International Women's Restructuring Confederation (IWIRC) from 2000 to 2002. She was a member of the Executive Committee of the Insolvency Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association from 1990 to 2003.
Special Designations
Sheryl was named in the 2010 Guide to the World's Leading Women in Business Law, and was named as one of the top 25 lawyers in the world in the field of insolvency and restructuring in the Euromoney Best of the Best 2008. She has also been listed as a leader in the field of insolvency and restructuring in the PLC Cross-Border Insolvency and Restructuring Handbook and is a recommended practitioner in the PLC Which Lawyer?, Chambers Global, Legal Media Group's Expert Guides – World's Leading Insolvency and Restructuring Lawyers, Who's Who Legal and The International Who's Who of Business and of Insolvency and Restructuring Lawyers.
Sheryl is the recipient of the first Founders Award presented by IWIRC for Outstanding International Contribution. Sheryl regularly writes and speaks on a wide range of restructuring and insolvency topics, including for the American Bankruptcy Institute, American Bar Association, TMA, AIRA, FRA, LLC, CBA, Insight, Canadian IT Association and Law Society of Upper Canada.

Sheryl is an author and lecturer on a wide variety of insolvency issues. Her publications experience includes serving as the assistant editor of Butterworth's Commercial Insolvency Reporter from 1987 to 1990, and as a past Country Chair (Canada) of the International Insolvency and Creditors' Rights Newsletter of Committee J of the International Bar Association. She has also been quoted in several articles concerning business restructuring, insolvency, bankruptcy and cross border issues. Sheryl frequently speaks at conferences presented by the American Bankruptcy Institute, American Bar Association, the Association of Insolvency and Restructuring Advisors, IWIRC, The Law Society of Upper Canada, Canadian Bar Association, Insight Educational Services, The Canadian Institute and the Canadian IT Law Association.
